St. David's Day
Today is St. David's Day, which is the Welsh equivalent of St. Patrick's Day. Instead of pinning shamrocks to their lapels, the Welsh attach leeks or daffodils to their bodices. You will recall my stunning discovery in London in December that the leek is the National Vegetable of Wales, and appeared on QEII's coronation regalia as the symbol of the Welshmen. I'm told that the Royal Tailor, who was responsible for embroidering the coronation vestment with the four emblems of the four members of the UK, asked if he couldn't please use the daffodil instead of the leek, as it was easier to sew in a deocorative fashion. The Royal Tailor was sternly admonished that absolutely not, the Welsh would accept nothing less than the leek on the coronation regalia.
